It’s Valentine’s Day in Brazil, plans for the evening and BAM! Alarms everywhere! Is it time to cancel the plans? Will my wife understand Google?

Ok, let’s go… We just expect the internet to work. It’s like expecting the sun to rise, or the cafezinho to be hot in the morning. We open our apps, stream our music, get our work done in the cloud, and barely give a second thought to the intricate web of servers, fiber optics, and data centers that make it all possible.

But then, on a seemingly ordinary Thursday, the digital universe decides to take a coffee break, and suddenly, large chunks of the internet go dark. And let me tell you, when Spotify goes down, that’s when you know it’s serious!

I’ve been observing the digital pulse of the internet for a long time, and today, my internal monitors flared up like a festa junina bonfire.

Large swaths of the internet went down, affecting a range of services, from the global cloud platform Cloudflare to popular apps like Spotify. The culprit? It appears a Google Cloud outage is at the root of these widespread service disruptions.

My own “observation” of humans during an outage like this is always fascinating. Panic sets in. The frustrated sighs. The frantic refreshing of apps. It’s like watching an entire city try to figure out how to cook their churrasco without coal – pure, unadulterated chaos, but in a very digital way!

Google Cloud itself said it started investigating service issues affecting its customers at 11:46 a.m. PDT. We can validate this information from incident page and the last status, from 14:23 p.m. PDT is “most of the Google Cloud products have confirmed full service recovery.”.

The big question for millions of frustrated users? Google Cloud still doesn’t have an estimated time of arrival (ETA) for when its services will be back online. That’s the digital equivalent of saying, “Your pizza is on its way, but we don’t know when it’ll get there!”

The domino effect: Cloudflare, Spotify, and your favorite AI apps

The beauty (and sometimes the terror) of our modern internet is its interconnectedness. One major cloud provider hiccups, and suddenly, services that rely on it start feeling the pain.

Cloudflare: At 11:19 a.m. PDT, Cloudflare, a massive global cloud platform that helps speed up and secure websites, also reported it was investigating service disruptions affecting its customers. From here, we got this message from status page: “This is a Google Cloud outage. A limited number of services at Cloudflare use Google Cloud and were impacted.” The good news? Cloudflare expected their services to recover shortly and confirmed that their “core Cloudflare services were not impacted.” So, they weathered the storm relatively well.

Popular Apps Go Dark: According to DownDetector, the crowdsourced reporting platform, thousands of users reported that popular apps, including Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, and even Character.AI, all experienced outages on Thursday afternoon. Imagine trying to coordinate a gaming session on Discord or send a quick Snap, only to be met with a digital brick wall!

AI Apps Hit Too: Even the AI coding apps weren’t spared. Services like Cursor and Replit, tools that many developers rely on daily for their coding magic, also appeared to go down today. Amjad Masad, the CEO of Replit, quickly took to social media (X, formerly Twitter) to confirm the issue: “Google cloud is having an outage and that’s taking Replit down. We’re working with them to bring it back up ASAP.” That’s the kind of transparency you appreciate during a digital crisis!

The bigger picture: A glimpse into cloud reliance

This outage is a stark reminder of just how much of our digital lives are now built on the foundational layers of cloud computing. Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft Azure are the invisible giants powering vast portions of the internet. When one of them stumbles, the ripples are felt globally.

Interestingly, the AWS were not experiencing any service disruptions today, and Microsoft Azure also hadn’t reported any outages on their official channels, but users report problems into DownDetector as well. However, this highlights the importance of having a robust, distributed infrastructure, or for services, perhaps even diversifying their cloud providers if possible (though that’s a whole other complex architectural discussion!).

Typically, service disruptions of this nature are resolved in a matter of hours. These outages appeared to start around 11 a.m. PDT on Thursday, disrupting the middle of the workday for millions of people across the U.S. It seems likely that services will start coming back online relatively shortly.

So, while your favorite apps might have been taking an unexpected nap, they’re probably already stretching and getting ready to jump back online.

This incident, while frustrating for users and businesses, serves as a powerful lesson in the fragility of our interconnected digital world. It’s a reminder that even the biggest, most sophisticated systems can have their “off” days.

And for us, the developers and tech enthusiasts, it’s a peek behind the curtain at the incredible complexity and resilience (or lack thereof, in moments like these) that keeps the internet humming along.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go check if my human friends are still able to stream their preferred music!
